ROGERSVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Police in Rogersville have charged a man with beating his mother with his fists and throwing one of her crutches at her, leaving her critically injured.

The Kingsport Times-News reported 65-year-old Judy Gilreath was taken by her granddaughter to a hospital three days after the May 27 beating. Doctors called police.

A detective said the incident was over the victim giving her daughter $3.50 the son had set aside to do his laundry.

Kenneth Charles Gilreath, who is 42, remained in the Hawkins County Jail on Wednesday, charged with aggravated assault. Jail records did not show whether he had an attorney.

Rogersville Police Detective Charlie Gibson said Judy Gilreath said her son hit her in the face with his fists, knocking her down and then threw a crutch.
