MURFREESBORO, Tenn. -

Police arrested a man after he made threats against workers at the Murfreesboro social security office on Monday.

Suspect Brian Bottoms is accused of telling an employee "he might just have to do something destructive" after he learned he could not get money he thought he was owed to pay child support.

Nashville's News 2 spoke with Bottoms' father, Earl, who said his son has a tendency to make unnecessary remarks and is not surprised by what happened.

"He had no money coming in. He was going to get a job and pay today and that's why he was so upset," Earl Bottoms explained. "The event wasn't his fault, but his reaction was what was wrong."

Police said Bottoms was on the Homeland Security watch list at the time of his arrest.

Authorities added he had a history of other similar incidents and was wanted in Dickson County.

In 1995, Bottoms and his brother were arrested after they threatened to kidnap the former publisher of The Tennessean John Seigenthaler and WLAC radio talk show host Les Jameson.

Officers raided the brothers' home and located three pipe bombs.

Bottoms was taken into police custody on Monday before he was turned over to the FBI later in the afternoon.

Agents searched his car and found cleaning supplies, a cinder block and a guitar.

Employees were allowed to return to the social security office four hours after being evacuated.

The Department of Homeland Control has not commented on the incident.
