NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

Hundreds of runners came to LP Field Saturday morning to raise money for Metro police in the Shoney's 5K.

The money, matched by Shoney's, will fund higher education for police officers in Nashville.

The 5K race started at 7 a.m. followed by a children's fun run at 8 a.m.

Police officers were there to take part in the run and sign up people wanting to join the department.

"It may be the only time in your life you'll get a police escort for the entire run," said Metro police Chief Steve Anderson.

Recent Metro police recruits ran in formation during the race.

Department spokesperson Don Aaron was among those that came out for the race.

"He says he's gonna run, but I believe he'll probably be walking," Chief Anderson said of Aaron.

After the race, runners had their choice of breakfast food at a Shoney's buffet near the finish line.

Shoney's CEO David Davoudpour presented Chief Anderson with a check in the amount of $20,000 after the race.
