Parents sue schools over timeout punishment

Posted:

WINCHESTER, Ky. (AP) - The parents of a central Kentucky kindergarten student have filed a $5 million lawsuit over their daughter being put into a dark room for six minutes as part of a timeout.

Matthew and Lindsay Lucas filed the suit against on Wednesday the Clark County Public Schools. They claim that their daughter who attends Fannie Bush Elementary School was placed in a dark, padded room with one window and a chair as punishment.

The parents allege that the punishment has caused their daughter mental and emotional suffering, nervousness and anxiety.

Along with the monetary damages, the suit seeks to ban the use of seclusion rooms in the Clark County School system.

Clark County Superintendent Elaine Farris told The Winchester Sun that the district has not received anything concerning the lawsuit.
