MURFREESBORO, Tenn. -

On Wednesday firefighters from the Murfreesboro Fire and Rescue Department were honored for recently rescuing a 16-year-old girl from her burning apartment unit.

Crews found Sharanel Nieves trapped inside a second floor building at the Northfield Lodge Apartments located in the 600 block of Northfield Boulevard last Monday.

Upon arriving on the scene, responding firemen used a ground ladder to pull Nieves to safety.

"Thank you to everybody at the fire department for the hard work," mother Enid Santiago said. "Thank you to my daughter too because she did the right thing and I'm glad that everything is fine."

Murfreesboro firefighters said they credit the quick rescue due to years of top training.

"We discussed how we were going to handle the situation en route, so when we got to the scene we already had a game plan in place. Everything went real effective," Captain Hunter Fite said.

Nieves received a cut to her hand during the incident.

The teen is now enjoying her summer break by spending time with family.

"She just left for Puerto Rico this morning," Santiago said. "She's going to spend the entire summer with my parents [and] her family over there."

The honored firemen added they were grateful for the opportunity to meet the victim's mother.
