CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. -

Charges are pending against two drivers in Clarksville who police allege were drunk when they collided early Thursday morning on the Highway 41-A Bypass.

Ironically, police said the drivers know each other.

Clarksville police said a 37-year-old woman was traveling south near Queens Bluff Way around 2 a.m. when her Mazda Miata crossed into the northbound lane and collided with a Ford Mustang.

The impact caused the Mazda to overturn at least six times and travel down an embankment.

The woman was not wearing a seatbelt and ejected from the vehicle.

She suffered head injuries and was taken by LifeFlight helicopter to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville where she was last listed in stable condition.

The Ford traveled across the road and down an embankment.

The driver, a 44-year-old man, was taken by ambulance to Gateway Medical Center in Clarksville with non-life threatening injuries.

The investigation is ongoing.

Police said alcohol was a factor in the crash and charges are pending for both drivers.

Their names weren't immediately released.
