MURFREESBORO, Tenn. -

An emotional Shanterrica Madden took the stand Saturday in her own defense.

Madden is accused of stabbing her Middle Tennessee State University roommate to death last March in their off campus apartment.

Tina Stewart, a junior basketball player at the school, was stabbed multiple times and died at the scene.

During Saturday's testimony, Madden cried on the witness stand as she recalled the fight that happened between her and Stewart.

She said the fight began after Stewart called an officer on her for smoking marijuana in the apartment.

Madden confirmed to the defense attorney that her bra had been ripped during the fight. She also said a knife was on the bed in the room where they fought.

Madden describes being in "extreme pain" and "immediate danger."

"Sorry I hurt her. I just wasn't myself," said an emotional Madden.

During the fight, Madden said she wanted to harm herself. "I wanted to kill myself," she said.

"Tina was standing over me and I stabbed her once in the chest," she added.

Madden said she left the scene, not knowing the extent of Stewart's injuries.

The jury in the trial was selected from Chattanooga. The trial is expected to resume Monday morning.

Madden has claimed self defense in the stabbing death of Stewart.
