Metro police officer charged with assaulting girlfriend

An off-duty Metro police officer was charged with domestic assault on Sunday morning after an incident involving his 29-year-old girlfriend.

According to police, Brandon Smith's girlfriend alleged he struck her in the face during an argument at his south Nashville's apartment.

The victim reported to police an argument began while the couple was at a Bellevue pub and continued after they left.

She called police from Smith's apartment to report being assaulted.

Smith, a four-year police department veteran, has been placed on suspension. Police said he is the subject of a separate but parallel administrative investigation.

Smith's bond was set at $1,000.
