Downtown Cumberland Park to open Sunday

Posted:
NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

After nearly two years of construction, Nashville's newest public park will open this weekend along the east bank of the Cumberland River.

The grand opening for Cumberland Park will be held Sunday at 1:30 p.m.

The park is located just south of LP Field, between the Shelby Street Pedestrian Bridge and the Korean War Veterans Memorial Bridge.

"This [park] is unique, it fully integrates the Cumberland River with the riverfront here," Nashville Mayor Karl Dean said during a tour of the new park Thursday.  "You feel like you're part of the river, which is what we want to have happen in this city."

The $9.5 million project began in October of 2010.

The park is free and open to the public starting Sunday.

It will be open seven days a week.

Mayor Dean told Nashville's News 2 the next phase of the project would likely be "The Great Lawn" which would be a large green space to be used for a variety of events including concerts.
