TDOT project to close I-24 for 13 weekends

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

The Tennessee Department of Transportation will begin a major construction project Friday that will result in the shutdown of Interstate 24 in Nashville for 13 weekends.

The project will repair two aging interstate bridges over Main Street and over Woodland Street near LP Field, east of downtown.

The bridges were built in 1961 and are more than 50 years old.

The project will cost an estimated $8.7 million.

During the closures, I-24 will be shutdown in both directions from the Interstate 65 split northeast of downtown to the Interstate 40 split to the southeast of LP Field.

The closures will begin each Friday at 9 p.m. and continue through 5 a.m. the following Monday.

The first closure will take place Friday, April 20 through Monday, April 23.

"We've taken consideration in this project and how we can best build it and have the least amount of impact on what goes on in and around this particular area," TDOT Commissioner John Schroer said.

TDOT will be using a new and innovative approach to replace the bridges' riding surface in order to save time and reduce the impact on motorists.

Crews will first remove the deteriorated concrete from the bridge deck.  Then, rather than pouring new concrete, crews will drop 277 prefabricated concrete deck panels into place.

During the 13 weekends, interstate traffic will detour around the work zone by taking the west loop around downtown Nashville.

Motorists traveling westbound on I-24 or northbound on I-65 will take I-40 West to I-65 North, then back to I-24.  Motorists traveling eastbound on I-24 or southbound on I-65 will take I-65 South to I-40 East, then back to I-24.

Work will not take place during the Country Music Marathon weekend of April 27-29, Memorial Day weekend May 25-28, the CMA Music Festival weekend June 8-10 and the weekend of June 22-24 due to a concert at LP Field.

Construction is expected to be complete by August 31, in time for the start of the Titans season.
