NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

An annual Crime on Campus report by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation found a slight increase of crime statewide on Tennessee's campuses last year compared to 2010.

For a second year in a row, the report found that violent crimes were up nearly 20%.

The TBI report also showed the number of reported forcible sex offenses increased by 47% in 2011, while drug violations increased by 26% and assault offenses rose by more than six percent.

Overall, there were 7,493 offenses reported in 2011 compared to 7,190 in 2010.

Despite the slight increase in offenses reported, TBI officials said many colleges throughout the state are taking steps to cut down on crime.

"Many times colleges and universities are sending out text alerts to their students if there is a crime prevention or something that the student should be aware of," TBI spokesperson Kristin Helm said.

Prior to 2010, the state saw a decrease of crime on campus each year between 2004 and 2008.
