Several schools closing early Friday due to severe weather

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

Several schools in Middle Tennessee are dismissing students early on Friday ahead of a severe weather system that is expected to move through the area later in the afternoon.

Among the schools dismissing students early include Bedford, Rutherford, Williamson, and DeKalb counties, among others.

Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro is also dismissing students at 3 p.m.

In Davidson County, officials are not planning to dismiss students early, however all after school and evening activities are canceled.

School officials said one of the reasons for not dismissing students early is because the weather does not have a definitive time frame.

Officials said their buildings are well constructed and procedures are in place for sheltering and cover during severe weather.

The Nashville Weather Service's Storm Prediction Center has placed Nashville and surrounding counties in a rare high risk for severe weather.

A strong south wind will push temperatures into the upper 70s ahead of the storms.

The severe weather threat stretches from central Alabama through Tennessee into Kentucky.

The potential of tornadoes, large hail and damaging winds is likely.
