NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

Metro police are investigating the circumstances surrounding a shooting early Monday morning in west Nashville.

Officers received the call around 3:45 a.m.

Responders found the victim, 62-year-old Kenneth Light, with a bullet wound to his abdomen outside his home on the corner of Louisiana Avenue and 63rd Avenue North near Centennial Boulevard.

Paramedics rushed Light to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where he was listed in critical but stable condition.

Light's two adult grandsons told detectives that their mother woke them after hearing a kicking noise at the front door.

They said they subsequently saw their grandfather standing on the driver's side of a small dark car.

They reported they heard one or two shots and Light fell to the ground.

The grandsons said they both fired shots at the car as it drove away.

A motive for the shooting has not been determined.

Metro police said a drug connection has not been discounted, as responding officers detected a strong marijuana odor inside the home and found drug paraphernalia in plain view.

Louisiana Avenue was blocked off for several hours, as well as portions of Murrow Road where damage was found to the back of a home.

Investigators believe the damage was the result of stray bullets from the Louisiana Avenue shooting and not a separate incident.

A few hours earlier, a 19-year-old female was hit in the leg inside a home on Illinois Avenue, about a mile away.

Police were trying to determine if the two shootings were related.

Additional information was not released.
