Former drug house restored to historic gem

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

Habitat for Humanity has teamed up with Historic Nashville Inc. to renovate a home in east Nashville.

The house, located at 1220 Stainback Avenue, was seized by the government in 2007 in a drug raid.

When Habitat for Humanity was gifted the property, many people thought the house was beyond repair but after six months of construction, the property has been rejuvenated into an historic gem.

Local non-profit agency Historic Nashville Inc. wants to restore properties in zoned areas to revitalize neighborhoods.

"What we're doing now is helping Habitat for Humanity, MDHA, different city agencies to restore the houses one at a time, a block at a time to bring the neighborhood back," Robbie Jones, president of Historic Nashville Inc., told Nashville's News 2.

The house was built in 1909.  Once builders began to break through the deterioration, many original features were revealed, including hardwood floors.

Eric Helm, the project's director of reconstruction, said, "This house is 103 years old.  This house could be demolished and you've lost 103 years of history.  Or you can put $80K into it, come out with a $150K property and put a family of need into it."

The house will be gifted to a family in need Monday.

A ceremony will be held at 1 p.m.
