NASHVILLE, Tenn. -
A student at Tennessee State University in Nashville was shot Sunday morning inside his on-campus residence hall.
Paramedics were called to the student's dorm in Watson Hall, located on the corner of 33rd Avenue North and Alameda Street just after 4 a.m.
Rick DelaHaya, Director of Media Relations for TSU, said an unknown male armed with a small handgun approached the student and stole his laptop and gaming system at gunpoint and then shot him in the leg.
The student, an 18-year-old from Memphis, is expected to fully recover.
It was not immediately clear if the shooter is also a student at TSU and whether he and the victim know each other.
"So we don't know if that means it was another student or if it was somebody that came in… we just don't know," DelaHaya said.
School officials said the residence hall does have a security guard and students must scan a device to enter the building.
Though school officials planned to increase security in the area, Sunday's shooting has some TSU students worried about campus safety.
"Safety is always a major concern, especially when you're in an open campus, in an open community," TSU student Karl McMichel told Nashville's News 2.
Metro police and TSU police are continuing their investigation.
The victim's name was not immediately released.
