NASHVILLE, Tenn. -
A tree was planted Friday in an honor of a six-year-old boy who died in a house fire just days before Christmas.
Cortaviz "Tay" Green died when his east Nashville home caught fire on the morning of December 21.
The little boy attended first grade at Kirkpatrick Enhanced Option School in east Nashville.
Friday, classmates choreographed a musical number, listened to tributes and planted a tree at the school in his memory.
"He was like the energizer bunny. He loved learning, he loved his friends, he just loved being an all around first grade kid," teacher Mononika Howard said.
Principal Sandra Moorman added, "This tree is not just for today. Once it becomes springtime, they can hopefully see it grow and some of the characteristics of the tree can be some of the characteristics of Cortaviz."
Green's mother was at Friday's ceremony. She told Nashville's News 2 she is grateful for the community's prayers and support.
At the time of his death, Tay had been left in the care of Travis Wright but the 29-year-old left him home alone to go to work.
A detective testified last month the boy would still be alive had an adult been home.
Wright's case was bound over to a Davidson County grand jury, who will likely hear the case in the next few months.
Wright has previous convictions in Nashville for cocaine possession and theft.
