LEBANON, Tenn. -

Teachers at one Mid-State elementary school are hopeful they will be announced as the winners of a $10,000 national competition.

Hannah Johnson teaches fourth grade at Sam Houston Elementary in Lebanon and recently entered a contest that would help her purchase new educational items for her students and school.

"I think every teacher I have ever known is always looking for something to improve their classroom and their student's lives, whether it is at school or at home," Johnson told Nashville's News 2 said.

Like many schools, Sam Houston Elementary has an extremely tight budget, leaving in little to no room to buy extra supplies, books or technology.

"Our Title I budgets got cut this year and so that took funding away from us and so our teachers do a great job going out and trying to seek what ever resources they can to get additional funding for their students and for our school," explained Principal Julie Beasley.

One possible source of additional funding is through Great American Classroom Makeover's online contest which would award the winner with $10,000.

Johnson told Nashville's News 2 she entered and was selected as one of 10 classrooms across the country to be part of the national competition.

"I went straight to my principal as soon as I found out, I didn't even go to lunch that day, I went straight to her office and we both just started planning and going and we have been working at it ever since," she said.

Johnson hopes her fellow Tennesseans will go to the contest site and cast many votes for Sam Houston.

"You can vote once a day per IP address. So I vote on my iPhone, I vote on my iPad, I vote on my lap top, I vote on my desktop," Johnson said.

The school with the most votes will get $5,000 for the classroom and $5,000 to use in for the school.

The contest ends on February 29.
