NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

More than 30 years after a Hermitage woman's death, police have made an arrest in her murder.

Freddie Lee Johnson, 60, was taken into custody on Monday for the death of 72-year-old Ethel Hercote.

Hethcote was found dead by her daughter inside their home at 928 Radford Drive on the afternoon of January 29, 1979.  Police said the woman was strangled to death.

Authorities told Nashville's News 2 certain items were missing from the residence, leading investigators at the time to conclude that robbery was a likely motive.

According to officials, Johnson is a registered sex offender as a result of a rape that occurred in Mississippi in 1979.

Johnson has been charged with more than 50 offenses in Nashville and has multiple convictions for crimes including robbery, theft, burglary and criminal trespassing among others.

Johnson is being held in lieu of $500,000 bond.

He is expected to be arraigned on the murder charge in the near future.
