NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

A Nashville man is behind bars on charges he stabbed his girlfriend multiple times inside her east Nashville duplex overnight Sunday.

Metro police said Karen Woodard, 53, received stab wounds to her abdomen and both legs.

Her boyfriend, Geraldo Rivas, 57, was arrested in the rear parking lot of the Kentucky Fried Chicken on Rosa Parks Boulevard Monday afternoon after the police department received information that he was seated inside a Chevrolet Monte Carlo.

Woodard's neighbor at 215 Cleveland Street called 911 at 5:45 a.m. after hearing her banging on the wall and calling out for help.

Detectives allege Rivas left the duplex around Midnight.

Neighbors in the area did not see him return and Woodard was found locked in the residence, according to a news release.

The fire department had to force entry to rescue her.  Woodard was found lying on the floor.

She was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where she underwent surgery.

Rivas was taken into custody without incident.

Police said he has a lengthy arrest history that reflects multiple convictions for crimes including aggravated assault, vehicle theft, unlawful weapon possession, burglary and patronizing prostitution.
