Joshua Nipper
OLD HICKORY, Tenn. -
A Metro police dog chased an alleged cigarette thief early Friday morning in Old Hickory.
The incident happened around 2 a.m. at the Mapco on Robinson Road.
Metro police told Nashville's News 2, the suspect, who has been identified as Joshua Nipper used a hammer to break into the station.
The 27-year-old was taken into custody, with the help of a K9 unit, a short time later after he was found hiding in the crawl space of an unoccupied house on Fuller Street.
"The K9 is an excellent tool," Capt. Ken Walburn told Nashville's News 2. "They have the ability to find suspects that are hiding, get into areas that officers couldn't get into safely and apprehend suspects. It's also a safety issue for the suspects, where we can taken them into custody without going hands on or having to use force."
Madison was taken to the hospital to be treated for his wounds.
He is charged with burglary, evading arrest and resisting arrest.
He is being held in lieu of $32,000 bond.
