Williamson Co. judge retires Rodney Atkins' domestic case

Posted:
FRANKLIN, Tenn. -

A Williamson County judge on Wednesday morning retired country star Rodney Atkins' domestic assault case against for one year.

Atkins, who appeared in court Wednesday, was arrested for domestic assault in November after his wife claimed he tried to smother her with a pillow at their Brentwood home.

Almost immediately after the arrest, Atkins filed for divorce from his wife, claiming she had fabricated details of the story.

Retiring domestic assault cases is fairly common when there is no prior history of domestic violence, according to Williamson County District Attorney Kim Helper.

Under the terms, Atkins must complete 30 hours of community service not related to the music industry and have no contact with his estranged wife for one year.

Helper said the case would be revisited in a year and dismissed if Atkins meets the terms.
