Consumer advocates say cell insurance may not be worth cost

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

While many cell phone users invest in the offered insurance package offered, some consumer advocates believe the added cost may not be worth the money spent.

Consumer Reports recently said the average cell phone protection plan costs around $10 per month and in some cases can have up to a $100 deductible.

Considering most people have two year contracts a cracked screen or broken button could end up costing the user hundreds of dollars.

Engineers at Quick iFix Smart Phones told Nashville's News 2 they have seen their fair share of damaged phones and that they have become experts at taking apart the miniature computers.

"Pretty much everything on the phone is repairable except for the logic board," Tommy Boualaphanh of Quick iFix said.

According to Boualaphanh, many of the customers that come to their two store locations have opted out of cell phone insurance plans.

"You've pretty much paid for the repair or paid for a new phone [after paying the monthly fee and deductible]," Boualaphanh explained.

Those customers who do purchase an insurance plan are not necessarily guaranteed a new phone if damages occur.

Many of the programs clearly state customers will receive a new or refurbished replacement phone.
