Tonya Ross, 43, was killed after multiple shots were fired into her Haynes Street home Tuesday evening.
NASHVILLE, Tenn. -
A 43-year-old mother of four was killed after multiple shots were fired into her north Nashville home Tuesday evening.
Metro police said Tonya Ross was lying in a bed inside the home located in the 1800 block of Haynes Street, west of Trinity Lane, when a gunman opened fire around 6:15 p.m.
Commander Anthony Carter said a bullet struck Ross in the head.
She was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where she later died.
"One of the bullets that went through the wall hit a female victim who was lying in the bed," Carter said, adding, "Bullets were fired inside the residence, so I doubt if it was accidental."
Tonya lived in the home with her elderly parents and brother. No one else was injured.
Tonya's mother, Johnnie Ross, told Nashville's News 2 her daughter did not have any enemies and is unsure who could have fired the shots.
"Right now, I feel numb. I don't think nobody would want to hurt her," she said.
Johnnie said when she heard the first few shots fired she yelled for her daughter and tried to get her sick husband down on the floor.
When Tonya didn't respond to her, she went to the bedroom where she was last watching television.
"I said, ‘Oh my God, Tonya is dead,'" she recalled, adding, "When I looked in there, blood was coming out of her nose and going across her face. It looked like they shot her here."
The family has lived in the home for more than 50 years. Ross's father was a member of the Ross Brothers Gospel Band.
Ross leaves behind four adult children. The youngest is 18-years-old.
Funeral arrangements remain incomplete.
Authorities said it was not immediately clear who the shooter was.
The investigation is ongoing.
