WOODBURY, Tenn. -
Sheriff's deputies in Cannon County shot and killed a 28-year-old theft suspect Monday night in Woodbury after he attempted to run them over with his pickup truck.
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation said Richard Butcher was wanted for stealing various metals.
Neighbors in the 2000 block of Petty Gap Road called police around 10:15 p.m. to report Butcher was in a black pickup truck "doing donuts" in the front yard of a residence.
The stolen metal was reportedly in the bed of the truck.
Two deputies approached Butcher and he tried to run them over with his truck, forcing them to open fire.
Butcher was hit by the gunfire and transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville where he later died.
Neither deputy was injured.
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is investigating and will turn over its findings to the district attorney general for further review.
Additional information was not released.
