NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

A Vanderbilt University professor plans to make his expertise available for free to anyone with an Internet connection.

Marshall Eakin is one of about a dozen educators from prestigious institutions including Duke University, the University of Virginia, and Northwestern committed to teaching classes for The Faculty Project.

Eakin told Nashville's News 2 he specializes in the history of Brazil and will teach "Brazil for Beginners" through the Web site.

"Here's a wonderful opportunity to reach more people talking about Brazil the way I would normally do by publishing a book," he said.

More than 250 people have already signed up for his class, which has not yet begun.

The classes are available on an on-demand basis, each comprised of videos, power point presentations, articles and other documents.

Other classes offered through the Web site include Modern China, Economics of Energy and the Environment, Classics of American literature: T. S. Eliot, Ancient Greek Religion, Perspectives on Contemporary American Democracy and Foundations of Business Strategy.

The Faculty Project is powered by Udemy, a marketplace for free and paid online classes.
