WHITE HOUSE, Tenn. -

A pedestrian was struck and killed by a car while walking along Interstate 65 North in Robertson County on Wednesday night.

The deadly crash occurred around 9 p.m. near the White House exit, about 20 miles north of downtown Nashville.

According to authorities, Mary Hartley was traveling northbound onto the exit ramp when James Jernigan Jr. was struck.

Hartley told officials that she attempted to stop to avoid hitting the 46-year-old man, but was unable to do so.

Jernigan was pronounced dead on the scene.

Authorities told Nashville's News 2, the crash and the investigation backed up traffic for hours.

Officers said drugs nor alcohol played a role in the accident.
