MURFREESBORO, Tenn. -
Volunteers in neighboring communities stepped up to help Rutherford County after tornadoes devastated parts of the county in 2009 and now they're returning the favor.
Saturday, the Rutherford County Sheriff's Office Explorer Post 106 collected items for residents in Center Point, Alabama where tornadoes caused extensive damage nearly one week ago.
"I learned they were hard hit by the tornado," said Cpl. Scot Appleton, adding, "I think it would be a good thing for the Explorer Post to help out another law enforcement agency."
Appleton told Nashville's News 2 he hoped to coordinate donations with the Center Point Police Department in the future.
The Explorers planned to collect non-perishable food, canned food and toiletries for the small community in Alabama from 10 a.m. until around 6 p.m. Saturday night in the lobby of the Rutherford County Sheriff's Office at 940 New Salem Highway in Murfreesboro.
People who wish to contribute may also leave items in the lobby between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
