SPRING HILL, Tenn. -
Authorities arrested a 15-year-old student at Spring Hill High School in Maury County for bringing firecrackers strung together with a fuse to school on Thursday.
A teacher found the suspicious-looking item on the second floor of the school around 9 a.m. and alerted authorities.
The school was not evacuated but placed on soft lockdown, according to Maury County Director of Schools Eddie Hickman.
Some of the school's 900 students were moved to a different area of the building, according to Hickman, but no one was in immediate danger.
The school's parents were notified through the district's automatic call system.
A robot was brought to the scene and removed the item just before 11:30 a.m.
It was taken to nearby a field where authorities determined it to be several firecrackers that had been strung together, according to Maury County Det. Andy Jackson.
Jackson said the firecrackers had a fuse.
The Maury County Sheriff's Office traced the explosive device to a tenth grade student at the school.
Jackson said the teen was in custody Thursday afternoon although the student's intentions were unclear.
Columbia police and fire officials, along with Maury County's Hazardous Operations Team and FBI, assisted in the investigation.
Additional information was not released.
