Organization continues to provide prom dresses to teens in need

A local non-profit organization is continuing to provide prom dresses to dozens of Rutherford County high school students in need.

Claressa Johnson began Archie's Promise in 2009 as a way to provide dresses free of cost to area teens.

"I think we've served about 350 to 400 girls and each year the stories just bring tears to your eyes," Johnson told Nashville's News 2.

According to Johnson, the average girl pays nearly $900 for expenses associated with prom.

"The average girl pays about $893 for the whole prom night. From the hair, the nails, the limousine, the whole outfit, the shoes, everything [is close to $900]."

Johnson is currently seeking donations that will be used later this year for her third annual prom dress giveaway which will be held at Holloway High School.

"For a young girl to be able to come in and get a dress and possibly some shoes, it takes that cost away from parents," Johnson said.

Johnson said she is need of donations for her upcoming prom dress drive.

Donations can be made at Holiday Cleaners located at 911 Memorial Boulevard, Heritage Cleaners located at 960 North West Broad Street and Holloway High School located at 619 South Avenue.
