NASHVILLE, Tenn. -
Metro police were called to a traffic accident Tuesday night in north Nashville and instead discovered a gunshot victim.
Officers responded to the scene on Westchester Drive at Stilton Drive off Dickerson Pike, north of Nashville, amid reports car had crashed into a house shortly before 9 p.m.
They found a red Pontiac Sunfire had run off the road and struck a house and the car's driver, James William Ray, had a gunshot wound to the chest.
Ray, 58, of Cottontown, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police told Nashville's News 2 overnight they were investigating where the shooting occurred and why the victim was in the neighborhood.
In a release Wednesday morning, detectives said they had developed significant leads and were working to confirm the gunman's identity.
