NASHVILLE, Tenn. -
Interstate 40 near downtown Nashville was shut down for several hours overnight Tuesday after a pedestrian walked into the interstate, was hit by a car and killed.
Metro police said the victim, Dorse Carroll, 42, was struck shortly before Midnight in the eastbound lanes of I-40 near the Fesslers Lane exit, just east of downtown.
In a release sent to Nashville's News 2 late Wednesday morning, police said Carroll made statements prior to the incident that he was going to purposefully walk onto the interstate in an act of suicide.
He was struck by the driver of an eastbound Chevrolet Beretta. The Beretta then collided with an eastbound Chevrolet Malibu.
Carroll, who had written his social security number on his arm, died at the scene.
No one else was seriously injured.
