SPRING HILL, Tenn. -
The Spring Hill Police Department could soon add another responsibility to its long list of duties.
The city wants to bring a seven mile stretch of Interstate 65, from Thompson Station Road in Williamson County to Kedron Road in Maury County, into the city's jurisdiction so Spring Hill officers can patrol it.
"People are complaining about speeders, reckless driving, road rage [and] possible drunk driving on the interstate getting off Saturn Parkway," said Spring Hill Police Chief Don Brite.
Chief Brite told Nashville's News 2 the move would also allow officers to crack down on drug trafficking in the area.
The department's K-9 and traffic officers would be assigned to the interstate and would spend about 20 hours a week patrolling it.
Chief Brite told Nashville's News 2 he has not seen a huge increase in drug related crimes, but Spring Hill is growing and he believes it's the department's duty to monitor the corridor.
"It's not our major problem, but it is a problem enough that we feel we need to address it," said Chief Brite.
While there's no doubt the move would generate revenue for the city, Chief Brite said he is not sure exactly how much money it would bring in.
The issue goes before the Planning Commission next month. A final decision is expected to be made in March.
