NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

Kentucky U.S. Senator Rand Paul was held by officials at the Nashville International Airport on Monday morning after he refused to undergo a pat-down.

Paul, who is the son of Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul, told Nashville's News 2 the full body scan went off when he walked through security.

According to Paul, airport officials told him it appeared as if something on his right leg triggered the alarm.

"The scanner said I had something wrong with my leg, so I said, ‘I'm happy to show you my leg' and I showed them my leg, but that wasn't good enough. They wanted to do a pat-down," Paul said.

Paul said he believes the scanner was triggered due to a glitch in the system. He said he asked if he could go back through the scan, but was denied and told he needed to undergo a pat-down, which he refused.

According to officials, Paul was denied access to the secure gate area of the airport since he refused to comply with security procedures.

He was escorted out of the screening area by local law enforcement.

"I was detained in an area and told if I used my phone I would get the full body pat-down," Paul said, adding, "I was really talked to in I think a brisk and aggressive manner. I'm an American, just like everyone else. I don't want special treatment, but everybody ought to be treated with dignity when they fly."

TSA released the following statement on the incident, "When an irregularity is found during the TSA screening process, it must be resolved prior to allowing a passenger to proceed to the secure area of the airport. Passengers who refuse to complete the screening process cannot be granted access to the secure area in order to ensure the safety of others traveling."

The senator said he was headed to Washington D.C. for a Senate session.

"I'm actually very disappointed [I missed my flight]. This would have been the biggest speech of my career in Washington to 200,000 people and I was prevented from getting there," Paul said.

Ron Paul took to his Twitter page to address the incident saying, "My son [Rand Paul is] being detained by TSA for refusing full body pat-down after anomaly in body scanner in Nashville. More details coming."

Rand Paul was eventually rebooked on another flight and was re-screened without incident.
