FAIRVIEW, Tenn. -

The driver of the semi-truck carrying 38 horses that crashed and overturned on Interstate 40 in Williamson County Monday evening has been issued citations for unsafe operation of a vehicle, failure to exercise due care and driving fatigue.

Mance Frank Reed was not arrested, according to Tennessee Department of Transportation spokesperson Dalya Qualls.

He also received citations for brake violations, frame violation and tire violation on the trailer.

The wreck was reported in the westbound lanes of I-40 at mile marker 182 in Fairview.

Three horses died as a result of the crash, which shut down the highway for several hours.

The owner of the horses told Nashville's News 2 the animals have been returned to his farm in Lebanon and are in good health.

Dorian Ayache denied reports the horses were on their way to a slaughterhouse in Texas and said they were traveling to farm in Oklahoma.
