SPRING HILL, Tenn. -

Spring Hill's mayor is fighting against a proposal to consolidate Columbia and Maury County's governments.

Last year, officials drafted a metro charter for Maury County and had a series of meetings to get public input.

Proponents say it will streamline government and save money.

Mayor Mike Dinwiddie told Nashville's News 2 he is unsupportive of the plan.

"It's going to be a drastic change not only for the county, but for the cities in the county," Dinwiddie explained.

Despite Dinwiddie opposing the new form of government, some residents are supportive of the idea.

One supporter posted online, "I for one am 1,000% for metro government to weed out the good old boy system."

Spring Hill and Mt. Pleasant both opted out of the plan, which means their city governments will remain in place, but Mayor Dinwiddie said he still has concerns.

"The biggest thing Spring Hill is concerned about is the loss of our urban growth boundary, which is almost entirely in Maury County. If our urban growth boundary disappears that means Spring Hill can not grow any further into the future,"  Mayor Dinwiddie told Nashville's News 2.

Part of Spring Hill is located in Williamson County, while the other part is in Maury County.

Spring Hill has been named the state's fastest growing city and one of the most business friendly cities.

Mayor Dinwiddie plans to go door to door each weekend to talk to voters about the issue.

The vote is scheduled for March 6.
