ANTIOCH, Tenn. -

More than 200 people, some in costume, hit the shores of Percy Priest Lake in Antioch to bear the frigid temperatures and take the annual New Year's Day Polar Bear Plunge.

Sunday marked the 13th year for the plunge at YMCA Camp Widjiwagan.

The water temperature was 48 degrees.

"This is just to have fun," Laura Johnson with Camp Widjiwagan told Nashville's News 2. "That's why we do the event. It's a fun community event."

While it is mostly fun and games, it also serves as a fundraiser.

"We sell t-shirts as part of our annual giving campaign to send kids to camp, to send kids to camp here at Camp Widjiwagan," Johnson said.

For some, the plunge is a family tradition.

"It's just a chance for the community to get together and do something fun and a great way to ring in the New Year," one participant said.

The Polar Bear Plunge is free and open to the public.
