NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

Mayor Karl Dean unveiled new mass transit proposals for Music City on Monday morning.

Officials conducted a study earlier this year in the area of the Five Points neighborhood located in east Nashville, across the Cumberland River and down Broadway before ending at White Bridge Road, to determine options to help with the growing population and rising gas prices.

Options considered during the study included not making any changes, a light rail solution, a modern streetcar and a bus rapid transit.

The results of the study determined that either the modern streetcar or the bus rapid transit would be most beneficial.

The proposed street car system would cost around $275 million, while the new bus system would cost around $136 million.

According to officials, the bus rapid transit could be implemented quicker than the streetcar due to less complicated construction and less vehicle procurement and testing.

Federal funding would also be available for the bus rapid transit.
