NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

Independent protesters associated with the Occupy Nashville movement have tried a new tactic resulted in 13 arrests early Sunday morning.

Police arrested 12 adults and one juvenile around 2 a.m. at an abandoned office building located at 2300 Charlotte Pike.

According to police, the protesters were found on top of the building.

All 13 were charged with trespassing.

Police cited and released the adults while the juvenile was booked and taken into custody.

Occupy Nashville protesters also marched outside the building. Those marching outside the building were not arrested or charged.

The protesters said in a statement they believed the property to be abandoned state property and wanted it to be used to house the homeless.

"We respect property so much that we're offended when it sits unused," the statement said in part.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol has not confirmed whether the property is state-owned or privately-owned, but it may have been recently sold by the state to a private owner.

An investigation into the incident continues.
