NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

A robbery suspect was fatally shot late Wednesday night by a south Nashville tobacco market clerk claiming self-defense.

The incident happened around 11:40 p.m. at the Kwik Tobacco Market located at 619 Millwood Drive.

The clerk, Sm Mazahir Hamadani told police the suspect, who has been identified as William D. England, entered the store, and jumped over the counter before the pair got into a physical altercation.

During the altercation, the suspect pulled out a knife, prompting the clerk to reach for his gun.

England was shot once in the chest.

The store clerk said after he shot England, he immediately called 911 and rendered aid to the robber until paramedics arrived.

The 25-year-old was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

Hamadani told police that England has been inside the store two separate times on Wednesday night, the first time to get change and the second to inquire about the price of cigarettes.

Police said there were no witnesses in the store at the time of the shooting, and the business does not have surveillance cameras.

Police said England had a previous criminal history and was on probation after receiving an eight-year sentence for carjacking in 2009.
