GM to make announcement regarding Spring Hill plant

Posted: Updated: Nov 21, 2011 6:15 AM CST

General Motors is expected to announce plans Monday morning to restart production at its plant in Spring Hill.

The announcement could bring 1,700 jobs to the area.

In 2009, GM was forced to lay off more than 2,000 workers at its plant in Maury County after a shutdown of the line that built GM's Chevy Traverse.

Executives on Monday will likely announce when the assembly lines will move again and what will roll off them.

Mike Colias is a GM expert with Automotive News and told Nashville's News 2, "There are some vehicles that GM just cannot keep up production on, such as the Equinox and the Terrain, and those are two of the hottest selling.  At least one of those will end up in Spring Hill.'

GM will reportedly add 600 jobs and invest $60 million in the plant next year and add 1,100 jobs in 2013.

Colias said that could put Spring Hill in line to produce a brand new GM vehicle.

"I'd say chances are good for that, I don't think it was any big surprise they would eventually want to restart assembly [in Spring Hill], it's definitely the most up to date of the idled GM plants," he said.

Monday's announcement is set for 10 a.m.
