Thanksgiving road travel expected to cost more this year

Posted:
NASHVILLE, Tenn. -

With Thanksgiving just one week away, many people across the country are preparing to hit the roadways.

Currently, gas prices are up more than 50 cents a gallon nationally, which has some holiday travelers reconsidering their holiday plans.

Nationwide, 42.5 million Americans are projected to travel for the Thanksgiving holiday, a 4% increase over 2010.

Chelsea Anderson told Nashville's News 2 that the rising fuel costs will be a determining factor if she decides to go out of town.

"I'll stay put if it's too high. If flying is too high if I can't find a reasonable ticket or if gas is too high I'll stay," she said.

Traveler Dan Weir agreed, "Depending on how high [gas prices] are, the last few years it seems like it's gone up more than usual around Thanksgiving, so that does effect our plans a little bit."

For those taking to the roads in during the next week can take advantage of useful Web sites such as gasbuddy.com to estimate how much a trip to your planned destination could cost.

On Thursday, the cost to drive to round trip to Knoxville from Nashville would on average cost around $55.

To drive to Memphis from Nashville, motorists can expect to pay around $65, while those traveling to Atlanta will pay around $70.

Around 873,000 Tennesseans are expected to travel by car this Thanksgiving.

The Nashville International Airport is already preparing for an influx of holiday travelers.

Around 33,000 Tennesseans are expected to travel by plane for the upcoming holiday.

Airport officials advise travelers to be prepared for crowds and allow enough time for check-in and security screenings.
