Local food bank faces major shortage

Posted:

A local food bank is in dire need of donations in an attempt to provide nine million meals to families in need by the end of the year.

According to officials at Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee, donations have been down dramatically.

"Our food donations have been down about 30% and we're not able to keep up with the demand, about as soon as the food gets here, it moves just as quickly out," explained Jaynee Day, President of Second Harvest Food Bank.

According to Day, the food bank has collected enough food to provide roughly 400,000 meals.

"At this point, we had hoped to be at about two million meals," she said.

Day continued, "I am concerned because I think it's a different environment that we're living in today even than the one we were in last year."

Last year, Second Harvest set a goal of providing eight million meals to families in need, but were much farther along in their campaign last year this time.

The food bank provides emergency food boxes for families throughout the Mid-State who can not afford to provide food for their families.
