For the first time in more than a year, the Regal Cinemas' Opry Mills Stadium and IMAX movie theater opened its doors for business on Monday. The movie theater, along with the rest of the mall was destroyed by the historic May flood of 2010.It will hold a much anticipated grand reopening event on Friday, with preview events for local charities scheduled for Monday through Wednesday. The three day preview events will include $2 movies, popcorn and soft drinks with proceeds benefiting several Tennessee charities, including the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and Nashville Film Festival, among others.
The theater's grand opening event coincides with the opening of "Twilight: Breaking Dawn: Part I" and "Happy Feet 2."Movie goer Amanda Murphy told Nashville's News 2 she was thrilled to take advantage of the special offers. "It's fabulous. We expected to have to pay a premium, because it is 3-D and IMAX. We are just so excited that the theater is open again," she said. The new renovated theater has new options on the concession menu, as well as new updated theater seating. "If you step in here today, you will see a whole new façade. Everything was taken down to the concrete. Everything feels updated and looks modern," said Robbie Arrington of Regal Entertainment Group. The theater has 21 auditoriums, including the IMAX. By the end of the month, three anchor stores will join the theater and Bass Pro Shops, which opened just five months after the historic flood."It is the revitalization of this area and everyone is excited to get back in the mall. We brought a lot of employees back to work. We have about 120 staff members," said Arrington.
