A man shot and killed his elderly mother outside of a Dickson nursing home Monday afternoon and then turned the gun on himself.
The incident occurred at the Dickson Healthcare Facility located at 901 North Charlotte Road, north of Henslee Drive around 4 p.m.
Authorities told Nashville's News 2 the man, who has been identified as 60-year-old Gary Hotvedt, was visiting his mother, Eileen Hotvedt, who was a patient at the nursing home.
Around 2:30 p.m. Gary Hotvedt took his 86-year-old mother for a walk outside of the facility.
Just over an hour later, he shot her in the back with a .38 caliber handgun, on the nursing home grounds.
"This is stuff that you read about and you see in other places but you just don't think about it happening in your backyard," Det. Chad Fussell told Nashville's News 2.
Police said they located a note at the scene in which Gary Hotvedt stated his plans to kill his mother and then himself.
Authorities believe the woman's declining health may have been the reason for the shooting.
"[Gary Hotvedt] didn't feel that anything needed to go on any further past the way it's been going," said Det. Fussell, "He just felt that he and his mother both needed to go right now."
There were no eye witnesses to the incident however, the police department received numerous calls of shots fired in the area.
Det. Fussell added, "There was a nurse that tried to come out and help the victims but they were already gone."
The investigation into the shooting continues.
