COLUMBIA, Tenn. – One man is dead following an officer-involved shooting Tuesday night in Columbia.
The shooting happened around 7 p.m. after police were called to a home on Jefferson Drive off Theta Pike, north of Highway 35, amid reports of a person threatening suicide.
According to police, as officers approached the home, 44-year-old Darren Cole struck one of the officers with a large stick.
That impact sent Officer Sarah Howell to the hospital.
When Cole went to raise the stick again, police said Officer Jeremy Humphrey shot Cole in self-defense.
Cole was taken to Maury County Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Officer Howell suffered only minor injuries.
Both officers have been placed on routine administrative leave pending an investigation.
