Historic aircraft to reside in Portland

PORTLAND, Tenn. – A historic Douglas DC-3 airplane, built in 1943, landed in Portland, Tennessee this week and will permanently reside at a local museum.

The plane, originally owned by Pan Am, was confiscated by the Navy and used to transported cargo during World War II.

The plane landed in Portland on Monday.

Its wings were removed Wednesday and Thursday, the aircraft was escorted by police through downtown Portland to the Days Gone By Tractor and Antique Museum.

Many residents took time out of their day to see the unique plane make its four mile journey, which took around two hours to the museum.

"You don't see a DC-3 coming down Highway 52 everyday that is for sure," Portland resident Terry Durham said.

Eric Escusa added, "It is the biggest attraction in Portland."

The plane will be on display at the end of the month at the 6th Annual Days Gone By Tractor Show and Threshing on September 30 and October 1.
