2 men charged with stealing lottery ticket worth $200K
NASHVILLE, Tenn. -
Two men in Sumner County are charged with stealing a lottery ticket worth $200,000.
Piyushkumar Patel and Kanubhai Bhatt were taken into custody on Thursday.
According to authorities, lottery officials contacted the Sumner County District Attorney's office after security procedures discovered possible criminal conduct when Patel presented the winning ticket for payment at the lottery headquarters.
"We have a number of safeguards in place to protect our players and maintain the integrity of the Lottery," Rebecca Hargrove, President and CEO of the Tennessee Lottery said in a release.
She continued, "In this instance our process revealed irregularities and our security team investigated accordingly. We then presented the information to the District Attorney General's office and he proceeded with prosecution."
Patel owns two convenience stores in Sumner County. Bhatt worked as a clerk at the Portland Express Market.
Both men are charged with felony theft over $60,000.
