Shackled mother awarded $200,000 in damages

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – A woman who was shackled by deputies during labor was awarded $200,000 in damages by a federal jury Thursday.

Juana Villegas told jurors Wednesday that her wrists and ankles were shackled in an ambulance in 2008 and she feared she would not be able to open her legs to allow her son to be born.

She later was unshackled and the baby was born without complications.

In April, a judge ruled the Davidson County Sheriff's Office violated Villegas' constitutional rights.

In court this week, Metro Nashville attorneys argued Villegas' problems were not caused by the sheriff's office.

Attorneys for Villegas had asked for $1.2 million.
