Woman testifies about fear while shackled

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - A woman who was shackled by deputies during labor sobbed on the witness stand when asked to recall the details of her ordeal.

Juana Villegas told a federal jury in Nashville Wednesday that her wrists and ankles were shackled in an ambulance in 2008 and she feared she would not be able to open her legs to allow her son to be born.

She later was unshackled and the baby was born without complications.

The judge ruled in April that the Davidson County Sheriff's Office violated Villegas' constitutional rights. The jury will decide what damages to award.

A psychiatrist testified that Villegas suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder and needs treatment

Metro Nashville attorneys argued Villegas' problems were not caused by the sheriff's office.

Closing statements were scheduled for Thursday.
