CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Toxicology tests will be conducted to determine whether drugs or alcohol played a role in a fatal accident that occurred Wednesday morning.
The two-car collision occurred in the 4700 block of Clarksville Highway just after 8 a.m.
Authorities said Velma Burkhart was traveling southbound when Steven Allen crossed the double line, causing a head-on collision.
The 68-year-old woman was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville where she later died.
Her husband, James Burkhart and Allen were also treated for non-life threatening injuries.
According to police, Allen had dilated pupils and slurred speech and told fatal crash investigators he had taken Xanax and hydrocodone pills on Wednesday night.
Police located a bottle of hydrocodone pills in his pockets.
All three were wearing seatbelts at the time of the incident.
